A QR code alarm clock keeps ringing until you scan a specific QR code or barcode with your phone's camera. Place the code in the bathroom or kitchen, and stopping the alarm requires standing, walking, and turning on a light — by which point you're genuinely awake. In Rizen, add the QR/Barcode mission to any alarm and register your code once.
How a QR code alarm works
You register a code with the app once — a printed QR code or any product barcode. When the alarm fires, the only off-switch is scanning that exact code with your camera. Not a code: your code, wherever you put it. The alarm effectively teleports its off-button anywhere in your home.
Placement is the whole strategy
The code's location decides how awake you'll be when silence arrives. Ranked by effectiveness:
- Bathroom mirror — the classic. You're now standing in the bathroom with the light on; you may as well brush your teeth. Morning momentum: started.
- Coffee machine or kettle — pairs the alarm's end with the beginning of a reward. Powerful association after a week.
- Kitchen / down the stairs — maximum distance, maximum movement. For veterans of failed mornings.
- Shampoo bottle in the shower — for the truly incorrigible. The off-switch is inside the shower. You're one step from just showering.
Anti-cheat rule: don't photograph the code "as a backup." The entire mechanism is that the code is not reachable from bed. Guard that.
Why it beats loud alarms and math alike
Volume can be slept through, and math can be solved lying down. Walking to another room can't be faked: it requires posture, balance, locomotion, and light exposure — a physiological checklist of "awake." It's a commitment device you set up when you're motivated (tonight) that binds the least motivated person you know (you, at 6 AM).
How to do it with Rizen
Rizen's QR/Barcode mission sets up in two minutes:
- Add the QR/Barcode Scan mission to your alarm in the Alarms tab.
- Register your code — scan the printed QR or a product barcode you'll keep in one place.
- Place it strategically: bathroom mirror or coffee machine are the sweet spots.
- Follow through with a ritual — since you're already standing in the bathroom, Rizen's morning ritual (sunlight, breathing, planning) starts right there.
